Device racks
The instrument and effects a lane plays through, with the things that move their controls right beside them.
Every lane owns a rack: one instrument followed by effects, in order. The instrument runs once per voice; the effects process the summed result, so their tails ring out on their own. A parallel container splits the chain into branches, each with its own gain, so an A/B of two reverbs or two instruments fed the same notes is one device in the chain. Groups, send buses, side effect lanes and the master each have a rack of their own.


Modulation
Below the chain sits the rack's modulation patch: LFOs, envelopes and other modulators that can be assigned to any control on any device in the rack. Modulation adds on top of the control's value rather than replacing it, so a knob still means what it says. Everything reaches the control once per sample.


Controls that draw themselves
A device control can be fixed, generative, or a list, the same three modes a note's fields have. A generative knob draws from a range on every loop of its lane (or on every note, for a note device), evenly along the knob's own curve, so a filter cutoff draws evenly in octaves. A drawn control shows its live value rather than a setting.
Versions
A rack embeds the device it uses, at the version it was added. If the library copy of that device changes later, the rack keeps playing the version it has until you choose to update it, and the faceplate offers the update and a one-step revert. Nothing you have mixed can change under you.
